November Memory for Kids

We have been choosing our memory verses from different CD’s produced by Seeds Family Worship. The music is a great way for kids [and parents] to get Scripture stuck in their heads. Getting God’s Word into the heads and hearts of our kids is one of the most valuable things we can do for them. This year, we are using their CD I Believe. They are also producing an online family devotional for these verses that you can find HERE. If you don’t already do family devotions, this might be a great place to start.

CD’s are in! If you would like an I Believe CD, or a code to download the album for FREE, find me or Stephanie Atkinson this Sunday at church. We’d love to give your family one!

Love is Inconvenient

This title says it all. And it has been one of the most challenging lessons to teach my kids. Almost as much as anything, I hope my kids grow into people who willingly go out of their way to love people around them. Whether it is their sibling, an unpopular kid at school, or the new student at youth group. My prayer is that they would be less insular, focused on themselves and their group, and more welcoming and hospitable to anybody God puts in their path. There are ways in which my kids do this that I am thankful for, and ways in which they have a long way to go. But as I read this article and thought about this for my kids, it caused my to think about my own unwillingness to love inconveniently. How often do I go out of my way to include someone unlike me? How willing am I to jump in with what my kids are doing late at night when I’m just ready to sit and relax? Would my family say my love for them is more often self-motivated or in the interests of “counting others more significant than myself out of humility”. Philippians 2, which is looked at in this article and one of the passages for this coming Sunday’s sermon, gives us the blueprint for seeing change in this area. It starts with considering Jesus and the inconvenience of his love for us. It’s a good reminder that my hope for my kids being the kind of people who love others in this way, is to experience the sacrificial love of Jesus for them, and to a lesser extent, the self-giving love of an earthly dad that has been changed by the love of Jesus as well.

The Loneliness of Parenting Alone

Being a single parent is one of the most difficult things God can call a person to do. While I don’t know this from first-hand experience, I have seen and heard it in the lives of many single parents I’ve known over the years. Because this article is so good, I’d rather you be encouraged by it than anything I have to say. But, like the article says, it can be really hard to ask for help. So if you are parenting alone right now, please let us and those around you know how we can best love and support you. And if you are not parenting alone, I hope this article can help you know how to pray for your friends who are and how to take the initiative to love and support them well.

The Hardest Fight to Have with Your Teen

Sometimes we can know that it is a challenging time for our kids and we need to be on the lookout for how they might be struggling, but it is hard when we don’t know what to specifically look for. This article gives a good description of some of the more common things kids are struggling with during the pandemic, including body image. I thought these were some good things to look for. And the article closes with a helpful idea for how to work through differences you may have with your teenagers about how to approach the pandemic. I think it’s an approach that could help us have better conversations with our teens on any number of topics we disagree on.

The New Milestone of Adolescence

This is a great way to think about when we give our kids a phone. It doesn’t declare a certain age or grade but a process that gradually prepares them to understand the power of a phone, and how to use it wisely. We have done some of this but probably more by accident than on purpose. This is a way to purposefully approach this huge milestone in the life of our child and prepare them for it.

Union with Christ When You Don’t Fit In

Wanting to fit in is one of the deepest longings of any teenager [it can affect us adults too! :)]. It can be painful to see your child excluded. It can be frustrating to watch your child choose loneliness and isolation over risking getting hurt in relationships. Part of what we can do to help our kids find the courage not only to risk offering their true selves to others for the sake of community but helping them embrace the calling to welcome others into their circle who are longing for community as well. We talked about this with middle and high school students at our student ministry event this past weekend. We listened to talks about Daniel and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego- and the courage God ave them to stick together while following God faithfully. The gospel gives us the security of being completely loved and accepted by God, who knows everything about us. And embracing what he has done for us through Jesus fills us with courage to embrace others in the same way.

8 Reasons its Essential to Teach Kids Theology

This is a great article on the importance of teaching our kids about the character and work of God. Teaching theology to our kids can sound like an overwhelming task but, like he talks about in the article, don’t sell yourself or your kids short. They are more capable of thinking deeply about spiritual things than we often give them credit for. And not only does every Christian parent have the ability to teach their kids, it is a great way for us to grow in our own faith as we do it. I hope this will be an encouragement and guide as you take this important parental calling to heart. He suggests some resources that can help in the article. Here are some I would add to the list as great places to start:

VIDEO: Cameron Cole on the Value of Pain and Suffering

This is a talk from a conference Madison and I attended last month. Pain and suffering is inevitable in the lives of our kids. As hard as we may work to try and protect them from it, they will face difficult challenges all the time. Sometimes that suffering comes because of their faith, and other times its a result of living in a broken world. Sometimes it’s the result of their own sin. But the Scriptures are clear that while no one enjoys suffering, there is incredible value in it for the Christian because it unites us to our Savior Jesus in a unique way, and teaches us to trust him more. I think this talk can help reshape how we view the suffering of our kids and how we can prepare them to walk through it.

Teaching Kids to Worship Every Day

What a great opportunity we have as parents to teach our kids how to worship God! We teach them by bringing them to church [or watching worship together online]. And we help them by worshipping in small ways throughout the week. This article has some practical ideas for how to do this with our kids. How to instill a life of worship. And his book, which is filled with more ideas, is available in the resource center at church.

Rooted Resources for Talking with Teenagers About Politics

Tuesday is an important day for our country. And Tuesday will go exactly according to God’s sovereign plan. It can often be hard to balance these two things at the same time. Engaging in the responsibility we have as citizens of this country to the beat of our ability, and putting our hope in God, who is holding all things together. And while it can be hard for us to remember these things personally, it can also be hard to know where to start in helping our kids understand these things, and begin to think Biblically about them. This is a compilation of articles from the last few years from a website for parents and student ministry workers with ideas for how to talk to your kids about politics. Most of them focus on the character we want our kids to be growing in, by the grace of God, and the ways in which belonging to Jesus changes our perspective on people, and the world around us. I hope these are helpful for you and your family as we walk together through this big week in the life of our nation.

Teens Did Surprisingly Well in Quarantine

This article has some surprising, and not so surprising, things to report about our kids during the pandemic. This author has done a lot of great research on the next generation and technology. The surprising part of her research is that teenagers fared better than expected during the pandemic, in terms of mental health. Their findings are that two factors in particular made a huge difference- more sleep and more quality time with their families. This is encouraging because it reminds us that some of the most powerful things that can affect our kids, are also some of the most simple. As life gets more normal this fall, we are fighting not to lose these important factors in our house- more sleep [here’s another thing more sleep affects] and more quality family time. It’s really hard! Especially as our kids get older and more independent. But for all of the things we say we do for our kids because we want them to have the best chance for success, encouraging them to get more sleep and eating dinner together are worthy things to move to the top of the list.

How Can I Handle School Anxiety This Fall?

This is a [hopefully] encouraging word directed to teachers who are facing a lot of added burdens to their job this year. I know I have felt this in student ministry and I am sure, as a teacher, you have felt it even more. But I think this is a good word about how to respond to our anxieties for parents, parents who have become teachers also this year, and for all of us.

Three Tips to Help Families Engage Fantasy for God’s Glory

This is an excerpt from a book I am reading right now and really enjoying. The authors talk about the importance of engaging with the worlds our kids are interested in- whether it’s in books they’re reading, music their listening to, or stuff they are watching. It gives us common ground to be able to talk about the important things we want our kids to learn. And they provide some great questions [which are in this article] to help start those gospel conversations through pop culture. I have been reading some of the books my kids have enjoyed and recommended, as well as TV shows and movies. It really has provided some great opportunities for conversation and I can always tell that it means a lot to them when I am interested enough in what they love to share it with them.

VIDEO: Raising Great Kids

This is the introductory video of an interesting series on the personalities of kids. They do an overview of different personality categories- the characteristics of kids in them and how it should affect our responses to them. If it’s helpful, the rest of the series is a whole video dedicated to understanding each of the personality groups more fully.

Five Questions to Ask Your Teenager About His or Her Anxiety

Knowing how to help our anxious kids can be a huge challenge. We might not feel like we know what to say, or even when the best time is to say it. This article has some simple questions to help get the conversation started with our kids- to help us crack what often seems like an impenetrable shell. One part of the article I appreciated is thinking about when and where is best to start these conversations. Timing can be everything, so these factors are important to consider when trying to set these conversations up for success.

Three Ways to Know if your Kid is Dealing with Loneliness

As parents, we all have times where we see in a change in our kids but aren’t sure how to interpret it or what to do with it. This article offers a way to identify loneliness in our kids by looking out for some key factors. If we think this might be something our child is dealing with, it can be the first step in knowing what to talk to them about and how to help them. Sometimes it opens the door for us to have helpful conversations with them about what has changed. Other times, it reveals the need to get a counselor involved to help them sort through what they are feeling and how they can cope with it in a healthy way.
