The Near Unbearable Burden of Making Meaning

What is it that is causing these younger generations to struggle so much with anxiety, mental health, and a lack of direction and purpose. There are less charitable explanations so I’m glad this article encourages us to step into their shoes and see the real challenges that young people face. Between the pressure to create and curate an image, and cultural pressure to make a name for yourself and accomplish big things, they are carrying a lot of weight. They need the promise of the gospel that in Jesus, they are no longer in the business of making a name for themselves. They are not their own, they belong to Jesus, and their life is now about resting in him and reflecting his goodness to the world. This is the news that can truly take the pressure off. Just ask Masters Champion Scottie Scheffler. This is a little bit longer article but it is so important for us to remember, and to teach and model for our kids.

*If you want to learn more about this, the book they mention in the article, You Are Not Your Own, is great.

How Do Children Make Their Faith Their Own?

As someone with a son in kindergarten and a daughter who is a high school senior [and reminding me she’s an adult regularly], I appreciate how he breaks the faith of our kids into a two-step process. When our kids are young, we should have certain goals for how we communicate faith to them and help them know Jesus. But when our kids get older, teenagers and up, there is a different way they are processing faith. This is a good thing because we don’t want them to just say they believe something because its what they think we want to hear. We want them to truly embrace Jesus and live their lives for his glory. So there is a different way we approach conversations about faith with them. Hopefully this understanding can help shape they way you point your kids to Jesus, no matter their age.

How Parents Can Help Teenagers Study Their Bibles

This is a good reminder of the importance of other people being involved in the life and faith development of our kids. The above article talks about the primary role that you have as a parent in helping your kids know Jesus. But there is also a vital part others play in modeling and teaching faith to our kids. Who are the people you are intentionally connecting your kids with so they can see faith lived out in others? How can you make sure that time is a priority?

If you have a middle schooler that came on Wednesday nights this week, their homework is to interview someone older in the faith and ask them a few questions about how their faith has grown over the years. I think this is a great idea from the workbooks we’re using and its something you could encourage any one of your kids to do.

The Biblical Truths Your Kids Need to Know

This is a great interview that covers a wide range of topics around the idea of discipling your kids. They talk about teaching your kids the Bible, talking to young kids about faith, modeling the faith, and more. As a mom of 6 boys, she has a down to earth perspective that gives me hope for our family.

The Gospel Cure for the Common Aches and Pains of Marriage

“Again, this is the natural drift in a relationship. Resisting the drift requires focus and intentionality. But most couples I know have put their marriage on the back burner. The blur of life has left them with no margin to focus on building a stronger marriage. The demands of work, the needs of the kids, and the calendar full of gatherings and get togethers leaves couples with no time or energy to invest in their relationship.

Even those who set aside time for regular marriage maintenance often don’t know how to use that time wisely.”

Marriage is hard. It is an incredible gift that God gives us. But it is also a lot of work. And the tendency to drift apart over time is natural. Like he says in this article, most couples don’t mean to drift apart. They just wake up one morning and realize it has been happening for years. This is why I’m so grateful that gospel empowers us to move towards each other, towards our spouse, with love, patience, forgiveness, and the hope that we can be closer tomorrow than we are today. I admit there are times when I choose to focus on other things in the moment, convinced that I’ll have time to invest in my marriage tomorrow. So this is a much needed reminder that we are either intentionally moving towards our spouse or unintentionally drifting away. I pray that my life [and yours] would be more characterized by the first one and that God’s Spirit would graciously carry me in that direction.

Teach Your Children to Resolve Conflict

Conflict between kids in the house is not uncommon. Like he says at the beginning of the article, “When you have 5 people in a house, there are 5 sinners in the house!”. As my kids have gotten older, there are some conflicts that we don’t deal with anymore but other types that have appeared in their place. Working towards peace in your house takes work. And the goal is not ultimately yours or my comfort [unfortunately :)]. The goal is to see the gospel works its way deeper into their hearts, and work its way out through how they treat each other. There are some simple, practical steps in here to help us all work towards peace  in our homes.

Died: Brother Andrew, Who Smuggled Bibles into Communist Countries

Our family had just read about Brother Andrew on Monday when I saw this week that he had passed away. God gave him the courage and ability to deliver Bibles to people in places in the world where Bibles are illegal. This article gives the details of a remarkable life.

In our Parent Book Club discussion this week, we talked about the importance of helping our kids grow in empathy- compelling them away from our natural bent to see ourselves as the center of the universe. Reading about other people’s stories with our kids gives them the chance to consider what life is like in other people’s shoes. We read about Brother Andrew in the book Everyone a Child Should Know [it's a great book!]. It helped all of our kids from 6-18 think about what it would be like to live in a country where it was illegal to have a Bible. Or to have the courage to risk your life to bring the good news of Jesus to others. I’d encourage you to find ways, whether through books, movies, museums, trips, interviews, or whatever you can use to give your kids a sense of the bigness of God’s world and the broadness of the experiences of his people.

SERMON: Genesis: Two Families

I listened to this sermon last week and while it is not specifically about parenting, he talks a lot about the power of our families to shape generations either towards knowing God or away from him. He talks about how important the job of parent and grandparent is in the hearts and for the future of the young people around you. I was really encouraged by it and I hope you will be too.

PODCAST: What About Sports? with Steve Stigall

Finding a healthy place for sports in the life of our families can be very challenging sometimes. Our kids learn a lot of valuable things through the experience of playing sports or being involved in other activities. But there is also a danger that these things become so consuming in the life of our family that we lose sight of what’s most important and miss out on our chance to shape our kids around what is most important- a relationship with Jesus and his church. This is an interview that dives into the value and dangers in a helpful way. I don’t necessarily agree with everything they say but its an important conversation as you navigate fitting sports into the rhythm of your family life.

Top 5 Heresies Among American Evangelicals

This article is interesting not because it talks about kids or parenting, but because it reminds us of one of the primary jobs of parenting. The article is a summary of a recent survey on the beliefs of evangelicals in America. Some of the results are surprising as a majority of evangelicals in the survey got some pretty fundamental things wrong about our faith. And this is why it is so important for us as parents to be growing in our faith, and to have a plan for passing that faith on to our kids. In the video below, they quote the verse about our kids being arrows for us to sharpen and shoot out into the world to impact the world for God’s kingdom. And he says, we don’t want to shoot dull arrows. We want to be sharpening our kids by rooting them in the good news of Jesus day in and day out, through what we say and through how they see us live. Our job as parents is to know Jesus and to make him known to our kids. And one of the great gifts of God is that he allows us to do that together as his church.

Fall Habit Reset with Justin Whitmel Earley

This is a kind of throw back to our spring Parent Book Discussion on the book Habits of the Household. Below are links to 1 page reminders of why these habits are important, how we can make them a regular part of our family rhythms this fall, and practical ways we can talk about them with our kids. HERE is also a recent review of the book that reminds us of some good quotes from the book. He also reminds us that the power of any habit is not in the habit itself, but in the Savior who shines through the habit as it helps point us to Him.

PODCAST: Mr. Beast’s Burgers, Rings of Sour, and Spoonies

This is a podcast version of a newsletter Axis Ministries sends out every week. They choose 3 current topics that are popular with teenagers and give an introduction to them to help parents understand a little more about what’s going on in their teenager’s world. It has been helpful for me to learn about some things that my kids love and talk about, and to learn about some things I had no idea about. The episode below talks about Mr. Beast [who my boys love], the new Lord of the Rings TV show on Amazon [that my kids have asked about watching], and a social media phenomenon I didn’t know much about. The podcast gets a little slow in places [and like I said there is a written version of this that is shorter] but it was really helpful to listen to their panel talk about what these things are, why they’re popular with teenagers, and how parents can interact around them with their kids. I think all of their episodes are valuable info and a good window into how to talk about these things Biblically. You can CLICK HERE to go to the page with all of the podcasts they offer or click below to go to the specific episode I mentioned.

I always walk away from listening to them encouraged about why parenting is so important and with some practical things to try out. This is a 15 minute interview about things they have learned parenting their 7 kids.

Grace and Gumballs: How the Gospel Informs Parenting

This is a short article with a parenting story I can relate to. And it’s such a good reminder of the kindness of God in our kid’s lives. I know I can sometimes get frustrated when my kids get something it doesn’t seem like they really deserve or work hard enough for. But don’t we all! And that’s the good news I want to rest in this week. That God has given me so much more than I deserve. I’ve been thinking more lately about wanting my kids to be able to recognize the goodness of God more in their lives and this was a great reminder of how we can point to his goodness, even in the little and seemingly mundane moments of everyday life.

What Does the Bible Say About Heaven?

Kids ask a lot of questions! This is one of the things I love most about my kids and working with kids. They are curious about so much. And questions give us the opportunity to help them discover truth about God, themselves, their world, and more. As tiring as it can be to constantly answer questions, it can also be a great joy and privilege.

Heaven can be one of those concepts that is hard for kids to grasp. There isn;’t something tangible that we can point to and, in some ways, we are not sure of all the answers. This interview has some great ideas about how to respond to kids’ questions about heaven. And his book is great too [from a really good series]. Hopefully this article helps you think about how to talk about heaven with your kids and, if you’re interested in the book, I have it in my office and you’re welcome to come by and check it out!

Don’t Leave Youth Ministry to the Youth Minister

This is an article for you- no matter how old your kids are or even if you don’t have kids in your home at all. This article describes the calling we have as members of a church and the culture we want to continue to build here at Faith. All of us have a role [like we commit to when we baptize a baby] to invest in the next generation and help the kids of our church know Jesus. This article talks about the impact we have when we do something as simple as strike up a conversation with a teenager sitting in front of us at church. Or getting to know the names of the kids who sit near you in the sanctuary. There are so many people who do this well in our church. From the 13 leaders we had on our student ministry retreat this past weekend, to the Sunday school teachers and children’s church/nursery workers, to the people I see every week getting to know kids in our church. We all have a role to play in faith passing down to the next generation. I hope you’ll consider the part, big or small, that God is calling you to play.

Died: Queen Elizabeth II, British Monarch Who Put Her Trust in God

Here’s a late addition after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. One of her enduring legacies will be the way she led with humility and shared her faith with the world. This article highlights the way her faith impacted who she was and how she led as you talk about her death and the impact it has on the world.

VIDEO: An Experiment in Gratitude: The Science of Happiness

I learned about this video from a podcast episode How to Help Kids Practice Gratitude. The video talks about the impact that expressing thankfulness has on our level of happiness. And when you express that thankfulness directly to the person, it has an even bigger impact. Watch the video and think about ways you could help your kids express gratitude to the important people in their lives. Or watch the video with them and see what they think. Our kids have so much to be thankful for and yet they often miss it because they are more focused on what they want next instead of what they have already received. Let’s be honest, we fall into that trap too. So maybe as parents we could even model for our kids what it looks like to let the people who matter most to us know how thankful we are for them.

Bluey and the Maternal Instincts of God

Bluey and God in the same article- count me in! I can totally relate to the amount of kids TV that this author has taken in with his kids. And Bluey is one of my favorites. Our family has a number of regular jokes and sayings from the show. There are a lot of great things about the way the show portrays parenting. This article talks about one episode where the mum assures the littlest one, Bingo, that she will always be there for her, no matter what. Where do we get that sense, that desire, that we want to be there for our kids no matter what? It comes from a God in heaven who assures us he is always there for us. I hope this is a good reminder of the heart of parenting for your kids but an even bigger reminder of the heart of God towards you.

Jesus Loves You, Tom Brady

I remember, awhile ago, having a conversation with a good friend of mine about his kid’s favorite athlete- a player for the Florida State Seminoles [Go Noles!]. He was trying to help his son know what to do as his favorite player was in the news for some bad decisions he had made. And he told me that as a part of their prayers every night, they started praying that this athlete, that they didn’t know personally, would meet Jesus. What a great idea! It can be hard to help our kids navigate how to view the celebrities and athletes they look up to. I have a tough time with it myself sometimes. But teaching our kids to care about celebrities as people made in the image of God, not just what they produce for our entertainment is important. As football is about to kick off, it is fun to root for teams and players with our kids. But I love this reminder from an article early last year that keeping our heroes in the right perspective is important- for us and them. [Even if your favorite athlete is Tom Brady!]

The 3 Words Teenagers Want to Hear as They Go Back to School

This is from a mom whose son is starting his senior year of high school. Seniors face a lot of added stress and anxiety throughout this transition year as they work to finish strong, figure out what they are doing next, and have their role in the parent/ child relationship shift [this is hard for us parents too!]. But really all students are facing higher levels of pressure to perform and keep up with the kids around them. I just read in my email that Oconee County Schools are rated the number one county in Georgia for this past year. I’m grateful that my kids get to benefit from the great work our  teachers and administrators do. But I also recognize that only feeds the fire of the pressure to achieve for our kids. Our kids need to know that we love them and are for them no matter how they perform. This is the beauty of God’s love and acceptance of us and what we get to pass on to our kids. They need to hear us say these three words often…

PODCAST: Fear Factor in Parenting: Fear of the Teenage Years with Paul David Tripp

I love the way Paul Tripp starts talking in this interview by holding up the value and joy of teenagers. He talks about how people want to be quick to talk about the difficulty of teenagers or the faults of teenagers, but we should be quick to talk about the privilege of raising and investing in teenagers instead. He also talks about the need for humble parenting, 5 questions we can use to help our kids respond to sin as we discipline them, and a whole lot more. Our plan is to read his Age of Opportunity book as part of our parent book discussions in the spring. But this interview lets you benefit from some of his wisdom on parenting today!
